California Takes a Stand Against ExxonMobil: A Landmark Lawsuit for Plastic Accountability

California Attorney General Rob Bonta filed a groundbreaking lawsuit against ExxonMobil, accusing the oil giant of misleading the public about the recyclability of plastics. California alleges ExxonMobil engaged in a “decades-long campaign of deception,” falsely promoting the idea that plastic recycling could effectively address the mounting waste crisis. Despite being a significant producer of synthetic materials for plastics, ExxonMobil reportedly misled consumers into believing that all plastics are recyclable, including their recent push for advanced or chemical recycling methods. However, current estimates reveal a grim reality: only about 9% of plastics produced globally are recycled, with the U.S. recycling rate hovering around a mere 5-6%.
